BEING RESPONSIBLE

Being responsible is an attitude expected from everyone in all spheres of activity. For instance, being responsible as parents means setting limits for your children while still exuding love and security. Responsible companies take all aspects of the company’s operations as well as its income and goals into consideration when making choices. Responsible drivers do not drive when drinking, obey the rules of the road and maintain their vehicles. As you can see, the list could go on and on if we tried to name all areas of responsibility. Therefore, let us say that a person who does what he promised is termed as being reliable but being responsible is more than being reliable. It refers to one who can be expected to act without supervision or control and still be expected to do what is right. Being responsible means knowing that one is accountable and answerable for all of one’s actions. Such a person would have good character and would consistently strive to do what is right and expected.

Someone who is being responsible also avoids pushing the blame to others. Some people, who are in the position of overseeing others, are in charge of many duties and tasks and would be held responsible if those duties and tasks do not get carried out or fail to be done properly. That is the main reason that only persons who prove responsibility are chosen for such positions.

The responsible individual would do what is expected, respecting the rights and freedoms of others. Being responsible as a parent would mean that you provide a fine example and show your emotional and financial responsibility to your children and provide proper guidance that will prepare them for adulthood. A responsible driver who is aware of what is right and the right and freedom of others would ensure that his vehicle is always in proper condition. Such a responsible driver obeys traffic rules and avoids alcohol when driving.

Being responsible as a company would mean that you live up to your promises and obligations to your consumers and employees. Paying staff accordingly, showing a profit, and providing quality products and services as well as contributing back to the community in which you operate in are all aspects of being responsible as a company. A responsible employee would use official time and materials for official duties only and not try to dodge any responsibilities.

Being responsible comes with rewards. It leads to greater responsibility, improved reputation, trust and increased self esteem. Responsibility often brings greater tasks, promotions and incentives. It also leads to greater recognition within your social network.
